Instagram's “Your Algorithm” Dashboard: What Dubai Brands Need to Know

Instagram is becoming a little more transparent about something marketers have been trying to understand for years: why people see the content they see.

In December 2025, Instagram introduced Your Algorithm, a feature that allows users to see the topics Instagram believes they are interested in and adjust those interests. It first appeared on Reels and was later expanded to Explore. Meta says users can ask Instagram to show them more or less of certain topics, with those choices influencing recommendations.

For brands, this is worth paying attention to.

And for businesses in Dubai, where Instagram plays a major role in how people discover restaurants, fashion, beauty, hospitality, products and services, it raises a simple question:

Does Instagram clearly understand what your brand is about?

First, What Is “Your Algorithm”?

Think of it as Instagram giving users a little more visibility into their recommendation system.

The platform looks at how people interact with content and uses those signals to understand their interests. With Your Algorithm, users can see topics Instagram thinks they care about and make adjustments.

For example, someone who regularly watches restaurant reviews, saves food videos and interacts with Dubai dining content may see food, restaurants and travel related topics reflected in their interests.

They can then choose to see more or less of certain topics.

This does not mean users are directly choosing which brands appear in their feed. It is about helping Instagram understand the types of content they want to see.

That distinction is important for marketers.

Why Should Dubai Brands Care?

Because Instagram is already a major part of the UAE digital landscape.

DataReportal’s Digital 2026 UAE report, based on data from late 2025, reports 8.05 million Instagram users in the UAE. Its data also indicates that Instagram’s potential advertising reach was equivalent to 85.5% of adults in the country.

That means Instagram is not simply a place for brands to post pretty pictures.

For many businesses, it is part of the discovery journey.

Someone may discover a restaurant through a Reel, find a skincare product through Explore, come across a Dubai hotel through a creator or discover a new fashion brand because a piece of content appeared in their recommendations.

So if Instagram is trying to understand content through topics and interests, brands need to make their content easier to understand too.

The Big Lesson: Stop Creating Content That Says Nothing

This is where the update becomes interesting for marketers.

A post can look beautiful and still be unclear.

A luxury restaurant might post a stunning photograph of its dining room. It looks great, but what does the content actually tell Instagram and the audience?

  • Is it about fine dining?
  • Dubai restaurants?
  • Italian food?
  • Date night?
  • Luxury hospitality?
  • A restaurant experience?

The stronger the content communicates its subject, the easier it becomes for people to understand why it matters to them.

That does not mean stuffing captions with keywords.

It means being intentional about the topics your brand wants to be associated with.

Think in Content Themes, Not Just Content Posts

This is something we often see brands overlook.

They plan today’s post, tomorrow’s Reel and next week’s campaign, but they do not always step back and ask what their account is consistently talking about.

  • For a Dubai restaurant, content themes could include dining experiences, signature dishes, chef stories, Dubai lifestyle and events.

  • For a beauty brand, it could be skincare education, product demonstrations, beauty routines, ingredients and customer experiences.

  • For a real estate brand, the themes could include Dubai communities, property education, investment, interiors and market insights.

Now Instagram is not seeing a random collection of posts.

It is seeing a brand that consistently talks about certain subjects.

And your audience is seeing the same thing.

Does This Mean Hashtags and Keywords Are Dead?

No.

But they should not be treated as magic buttons.

Your caption, on-screen text, spoken words, visuals and the actual subject of your content all contribute to how clearly your content communicates its topic.

The better approach is to make your content naturally specific.

Instead of writing:

“Another beautiful day at our place.”

Try something that actually tells people what they are looking at:

“Sunday brunch in Dubai with waterfront views, fresh pastries and live music.”

The second version gives the audience much more context.

It also gives Instagram more information about what the content is about.

The aim is not to write for the algorithm.

Write clearly for people, and make sure the algorithm can understand the same story.

What Does This Mean for Reels?

Quite a lot.

Meta’s Your Algorithm feature was first introduced around Reels, where users could see the topics Instagram believed they were interested in and adjust those preferences. Instagram later expanded the feature to Explore, with Meta describing Reels and Explore recommendations as connected through the same interest system.

For brands, this is another reason not to treat Reels simply as short videos.

A Reel should have a clear subject.

If you are a Dubai restaurant, make it obvious whether the Reel is about your food, dining experience, chef, location or a specific offer.

If you are a fashion brand, show the product, styling idea or trend clearly.

If you are a service business, explain the problem you solve.

A Reel does not have to be complicated.

It just needs to have a reason to exist.

Dubai Brands Also Need to Leave Room for Trends

Of course, there is a balance.

Dubai moves quickly. New restaurants open, products launch, events happen and trends can change within days.

A good Instagram strategy cannot be completely rigid.

You still need reactive content.

You still need to participate in relevant trends.

You still need behind the scenes content, customer moments, collaborations and the occasional post that simply feels right for the brand.

The trick is to make trends fit your brand rather than changing your brand to fit every trend.

If a trend is relevant to your audience and your content themes, use it.

If it has nothing to do with your business, you do not need to force it.

What Should Marketers Do Now?

Start by looking at your last 20 posts.

Do you see clear themes?

Could someone understand what your business does from your content?

Are you repeatedly talking about the subjects you want to be known for?

Are your Reels saying something specific?

Are your captions helping people understand the content?

And most importantly, are you creating content because it is relevant to your audience or simply because you feel like you need to post?

Your Algorithm is a reminder that social media is becoming less about posting for the sake of posting and more about creating content that fits real interests.

The algorithm is changing.

Your strategy should evolve with it.
